DRS allows a driver to reduce rear wing drag. It helps increase straight line speed. The system opens a flap on the rear wing. Less air resistance means higher top speed. Drivers can only use it in certain zones. They must also be close to the car ahead. For example a driver within one second can activate DRS. He presses a button on the steering wheel. The car gains speed down the straight. This boost helps with overtaking attempts. Officials control when DRS is allowed. Safety rules disable it in wet conditions. DRS encourages more passing during races.
