A dummy pass is a clever trick where a player pretends to throw the ball but keeps it. The ball-carrier makes a large throwing motion toward a teammate to fool the nearby defenders. If the defenders believe the fake, they will turn their attention to the other player. This creates a temporary gap in the defensive line for the ball-carrier to sprint through. It is a highly effective tool for playmakers who want to create space in a crowded area. Success depends on the player’s ability to sell the move with their eyes and body language. It requires great confidence to hold onto the ball while a defender is charging at you. For example, a fly-half might fake a wide pass to their winger to draw the defense away. They then tuck the ball back in and run through the opening to score a try. It is a classic move of deception.
