Earned Run Meaning in Softball

An earned run is a score that occurs due to the skill of the batting team. This run happens without the assistance of any defensive errors or passed balls by the catcher. The pitcher receives full responsibility for this score in their official statistical record for the game. If a batter hits a home run, the resulting score counts as an earned run. A runner on second base scores after the next hitter drives a clean single into center field. This run is earned because the defense played perfectly but could not stop the fast runner. Officials must reconstruct the inning to decide if a run counts as earned or unearned. This distinction helps teams evaluate the true performance of their pitchers regardless of the defense. Coaches track these runs to identify if the pitcher or the fielders need more practice.
