An edge forward is a versatile player who operates in the wide channels near the sidelines. While most forwards stay in the middle to do the heavy work, these players possess more speed. They often act as a bridge between the powerful forward pack and the agile backline players. Their job is to run into gaps on the edges of the field where defenders are often smaller.
By positioning themselves wide, they force the defense to spread out and cover more of the grass. They must be strong enough to win tackles but fast enough to outrun many traditional forwards. This role has become more popular as the modern game requires athletes who can do every job.
For example, a tall flanker might stay wide to catch a cross-field kick or beat a winger one-on-one. This creates a physical mismatch that often leads to an easy score for the attacking team. It is a tactical advantage.
