An edge to slip occurs when the ball grazes the side of the bat and flies directly to a fielder standing next to the wicketkeeper. This is a very common way to get out against fast bowlers who make the ball curve away from the batter’s body.
Example: The bowler celebrated instantly when the batter offered a thick edge to slip that was caught comfortably at chest height.
Pro-Tip: Batters try to play with ‘soft hands’ to ensure that if they do edge the ball, it falls short of the slip fielders instead of carrying to them. This defensive technique is vital for surviving the early overs of a match when the new ball is moving the most.
