Error Meaning in Baseball

Definition: An error is a mistake made by a fielder that allows a batter to reach base or a runner to advance when they should have been put out. It is a statistical judgment made by an official called the “Official Scorer,” who decides if the play was a failure of the fielder’s skill rather than a great piece of hitting by the batter. Errors can happen in many ways, such as a player dropping a ball that was easily caught, throwing the ball over a teammate’s head into the stands, or letting a ground ball roll right through their legs.

Errors are a unique part of baseball because they are based on human opinion. If a batter hits a very fast ball that no one could possibly catch, it is called a “hit.” But if the ball is hit slowly and the shortstop bobbles it or trips, it is recorded as an error. There are two main types: fielding errors and throwing errors. A fielding error happens when the ball isn’t caught or handled cleanly. A throwing error happens when a fielder has the ball but makes a bad pass to a teammate, allowing the runner to stay safe. Pitchers especially dislike errors because if a run scores because of a mistake, it is called an “unearned run,” meaning it doesn’t count against the pitcher’s personal statistics, but it still hurts the team’s score.

For a player, committing an error can be very embarrassing, but it is a normal part of the game. Even the best professional players in the world make errors occasionally because the ball can bounce in strange ways or the grass can be slippery. However, a team that makes too many errors is usually a losing team, as they are essentially giving the opponent “extra chances” to score. Coaches spend hours practicing “fundamentals”—like keeping your glove on the ground and using two hands to catch—specifically to reduce the number of errors a team makes during a game.
