Extension Phase Meaning in Weightlifting

Extension phase refers to the moment when the lifter fully straightens their hips and knees during the pull. This is the most powerful part of the lift where the athlete generates upward momentum. Reaching full extension ensures that the barbell travels high enough for the athlete to drop underneath it. Many lifters emphasize this part of the move by rising onto their toes at the top. A weightlifter drives their feet into the floor to finish the pull with a vertical chest. This explosive finish creates the necessary flight time for the bar during the snatch movement. Missing this phase results in a low pull and a failed attempt in the catch.
