Fair Ball Meaning in Softball

A fair ball is any batted ball that stays within the legal boundaries of the field. The ball must land inside or touch the foul lines to remain live for play. If a ball hits the foul pole in the outfield, it counts as fair. Runners may advance as far as possible once the ball is ruled fair by officials. A batter hits a line drive that lands exactly on the chalk line in right field. The umpire points toward the center of the field to signal the ball is in play. This allows the hitter to run toward first base while the defense tries to catch it. Fielders must react quickly to fair balls to prevent the offense from scoring any runs. Knowing the difference between fair and foul is a basic requirement for every softball player.
