Definition: Fair territory is the area of the playing field within and including the two white foul lines that extend from home plate to the outfield fence. Any ball hit into this area is considered “in play,” and the batter must run to first base.
A ball is fair if it lands inside the lines or touches a foul pole. Even if a ball starts in fair territory and then rolls out of bounds after passing first or third base, it is still considered fair. The lines themselves are part of fair territory, so a ball landing directly on the white line is a fair ball.
Example: The ball landed just inside the right-field line in fair territory, allowing the runner to reach second base easily.
