Fastpitch Windmill Meaning in Softball

The fastpitch windmill is the signature pitching motion used to generate maximum speed and power. The pitcher rotates the throwing arm in a full 360 degree circle before releasing the ball. This circular path builds momentum like a spinning fan to propel the ball forward very fast. The release occurs at the bottom of the circle near the hip of the pitcher. A star pitcher completes a full arm rotation and snaps the wrist at the release point. This snap adds spin and velocity to the pitch to make it harder to hit. Most of the power actually comes from the legs pushing off the rubber during the turn. Mastering the windmill requires years of practice to coordinate the arm circle with the stride. This technique allows softball pitchers to throw nearly as fast as professional baseball players.
