Feather Meaning in Billiards

A feather is the thinnest possible contact you can make between two balls. It is even more delicate than a standard thin cut shot. You are essentially just brushing the surface of the object ball with the cue ball. This is often used for defensive safety plays rather than trying to pocket a ball. A feather hit allows you to move the cue ball a long distance while barely moving the target. It is a high-finesse move that requires a very steady hand and sharp eyesight. If you miss by even a hair, you will fail to hit the ball at all, resulting in a foul. For example, a player feathers the edge of a ball to hide the cue ball behind a rail.
