A fiddle refers to a small raised lip or rail around the edge of a table, counter, or shelf on a boat. Its primary purpose is to prevent plates, cups, and other items from sliding off when the vessel leans over (heels) or moves through rough waves. These are essential in the galley (kitchen) and the navigation station to keep the interior organized and safe during travel. One specific example involves a sailor placing a coffee mug on a table while the boat is tilted at twenty degrees. The wooden fiddle catches the base of the mug and keeps it from crashing onto the cabin sole.
