Fielder’s Choice Meaning in Softball

A fielder’s choice occurs when a fielder chooses to retire a baserunner instead of the batter. The batter reaches first base safely because the defense focused on a different lead runner. This play usually happens when multiple runners are on the base paths during a hit. Officials do not credit the batter with a hit on their official stat sheet. A shortstop catches a grounder and throws to second base to get the lead out. The batter arrives at first base while the defense completes the play at second. This strategy allows the defense to remove the most dangerous runner from the scoring position. Coaches instruct players to prioritize the lead runner to prevent a run from scoring. The choice reflects the tactical decision made by the defender during a live action.
