First serve percentage measures how often a player successfully hits their first serve into the correct box. The first serve is typically the fastest and most aggressive shot in a player’s arsenal. While it is important to hit it hard, it is equally important to make it land inside the court. If this percentage is too low, the player must rely on their slower second serve too often. This gives the opponent an easier chance to attack and take control of the point. Most professionals aim for a first serve percentage between sixty and seventy percent to be effective. For example, a player might have a fifty percent rate, meaning they are missing every other big serve. This forces them to work much harder to win their games and leads to physical exhaustion. Maintaining a high percentage keeps the opponent on the defensive and prevents them from finding a rhythm. It is a key indicator of a player’s consistency and focus.
