A flat exchange involves a series of fast and level shots hit. These shots travel back and forth just above the net height area. Neither player hits the shuttlecock high or downward with great steepness. This type of rally requires extremely fast reflexes and very short swings. It often happens in doubles when both teams are attacking the midcourt. Two players stand near the middle and hit quick drives at each other. The shuttlecock moves horizontally across the net four or five times quickly. This intense battle ends when one player misses or hits the net. Keeping the racket in front of the body is vital for survival. Small steps help players adjust their position to the fast moving shuttlecock. Flat exchanges test the hand speed and reaction time of every player.
