A flat lift is a defensive shot hit with a low trajectory. The player hits the shuttlecock from the net toward the backcourt. Unlike a high lift it travels lower and much faster through air. This shot aims to catch the opponent off guard in the back. It moves the opponent quickly without giving them much time to smash. A player reaches a net shot and flicks it to the back. The shuttlecock flies just over the reach of the opponent at net. This forces the rear player to hit a difficult and weak return. Good wrist strength is necessary to generate power from a short swing. The shuttlecock must stay high enough to avoid a net player interception. Flat lifts are risky but effective tools for changing the rally pace.
