A flat line refers to a group of attacking players standing side-by-side very close to the ball. Unlike a deep line, this formation allows for very fast passes that give defenders no time to react. The goal is to hit the defensive line at high speed before the tacklers can move forward. This strategy is high-risk because it is easier for players to accidentally drop the ball forward. It also makes the team more vulnerable to an interception if a defender reads the pass. However, a successful flat attack can tear through a defense in a matter of seconds. It requires perfect timing and very accurate passing between all the players in the backline. For example, the fly-half might pass to a center who is running a flat line at full speed. This quick move catches the defense off guard and results in a clean break through the middle. It is an aggressive attacking style.
