A flip turn is a somersault maneuver used to change direction at the pool wall. Swimmers tuck their chin and roll forward as they approach the end of a lap. Their feet land against the wall to provide a powerful push in the opposite direction. This technique allows the athlete to maintain speed without stopping or touching with their hands. A swimmer performing freestyle executes a fast flip to begin the second lap. This turn requires excellent breath control since the swimmer remains underwater during the entire rotation. Mastering the distance from the wall ensures the feet land with enough room to kick. Staying streamlined after the push-off maximizes the momentum gained from the powerful leg drive.
