The flutter kick is a continuous alternating leg movement used in freestyle and backstroke. Swimmers keep their legs relatively straight while moving them up and down in a rhythmic beat. This motion provides stability and helps maintain a high body position on the water’s surface. The power comes from the hips rather than just the knees to avoid unnecessary drag. An athlete uses a fast flutter kick to sprint during the final ten meters. Flexible ankles allow the feet to act like fins for better propulsion through the pool. Coaches often use kickboards during practice to isolate and strengthen the leg muscles. A steady kick prevents the hips from sinking and slowing the swimmer down.
