A forward somersault is a full 360-degree rotation performed in a forward-facing direction. The diver starts by facing the water and jumps upward from the board. They flip their body forward to complete one full circular turn in flight. This move can be done in tuck, pike, or straight body positions. It forms the foundation for many complex dives used in professional high-level events. The athlete must generate enough height to finish the turn before hitting water. One example of this is a forward double somersault from a springboard. Rotating the shoulders forward quickly helps the body spin at the correct speed. The diver must keep their eyes open to spot the water for entry. A clean somersault requires the athlete to stay in a compact shape. This maneuver is a core skill for every competitive diver worldwide.
