A foul in football is an unfair or illegal action committed by a player against an opponent while the ball is in play that violates the Laws of the Game, such as tripping, pushing, charging, striking, or handling the ball deliberately (outside the goalkeeper’s own penalty area), and the referee penalizes these acts by stopping play and awarding a free kick or penalty kick to the opposing team; fouls are judged based on whether they were careless, reckless, or used excessive force, and they help maintain fair competition and player safety.
