Foul play is any action committed by a player that is against the rules or spirit of the game. This includes dangerous acts like high tackles, tripping, punching, or tackling a player in the air. It also covers unsportsmanlike behavior such as time-wasting, dissent toward officials, or intentional cheating. The referee has the power to punish foul play with a penalty, a yellow card, or a red card. Maintaining player safety is the main reason these rules are enforced so strictly by the officials. Dangerous play can lead to serious injuries, so referees aim to remove reckless players from the field. Professional players can also face long suspensions and fines for serious instances of foul play after a match. For example, a defender might tackle an opponent by grabbing their jersey around the neck area. The referee will call foul play and show a yellow card for a dangerous high tackle. It ensures a safe environment.
