A free runner is a baserunner who starts an inning on second base during tiebreakers. This rule applies during extra innings to help teams score runs and end the game faster. The player who made the last out in the previous inning usually takes this spot. This runner puts immediate pressure on the defense without the offense needing a hit first. A team starts the eighth inning with their fastest runner standing on the second base bag. This setup allows the batter to use a bunt to move the runner closer to home. The game becomes much more intense because a single hit can now result in a win. This format is a standard part of international and collegiate softball tournament play across the globe. Using a free runner ensures that games do not last an unreasonable amount of time.
