Freeboard Meaning in Sailing

Freeboard represents the vertical distance from the water’s surface to the top of the deck or ‘gunwale.’ A boat with high freeboard has tall sides that keep the interior dry and safe from waves, but it can be harder for the wind to push against. Low freeboard is common on racing boats to reduce weight and wind resistance, though it makes for a much wetter ride for the crew. One specific example involves a sailor noticing the freeboard decrease as more passengers and heavy gear are loaded onto the boat. If the freeboard becomes too low, the boat is at risk of taking on water in rough seas.
