Front row cover refers to the substitute players on the bench who are trained to play as props or hookers. These positions are highly specialized and require specific training to ensure the safety of the scrum. Every team must have at least one or two players capable of filling these roles if a starter gets hurt. If a team runs out of qualified front row cover, the scrums must become uncontested for safety. This means the two teams do not push against each other, which changes the dynamic of the game. Rules are very strict about having enough cover to prevent dangerous injuries to the neck and spine. Coaches must plan their bench carefully to ensure they have the right players ready to step in at any time. For example, if a starting hooker gets a red card, the coach must bring on their front row cover immediately. This keeps the physical contest of the scrum safe and legal for both sides. It is a mandatory safety requirement.
