FTP stands for Functional Threshold Power and represents the maximum effort a rider can hold for one hour. It is measured in watts using a power meter and is a key metric for training. Knowing your FTP allows you to set specific training zones for different types of workouts.
Most cyclists perform a twenty-minute test to estimate this number and track their fitness progress. A higher FTP means you are a stronger and more efficient rider on flat roads and climbs. It is often compared to a person’s weight to determine how well they can climb steep mountains. Coaches use this number to plan peak performance for important races and events. It is a realistic way to measure your engine without the influence of wind or terrain.
For example, a cyclist completes a fitness test and finds their FTP has increased by ten percent over the winter. This means they can now maintain a faster pace during their local group rides. It is your cycling strength score.
