A gilet is a lightweight, sleeveless cycling vest used to protect your chest from the wind. It is a versatile piece of clothing that keeps your core warm while allowing your arms to move freely. Most gilets are made with a windproof front and a mesh back to prevent you from overheating. They are very thin and can be easily folded up and stuffed into a jersey pocket when the sun comes out. This makes them perfect for cool morning starts or long descents from mountain summits. Many feature reflective strips to help you stay visible to cars in low light. For example, a rider zips up their gilet before starting a fast five-mile descent to block the chilly mountain air. Once they reach the warm valley, they take it off to stay comfortable for the rest of the ride. It is a staple for riding in changing weather.
