Goal defence is a defensive position responsible for guarding the goal attack and protecting the circle. This player spends most of their time in the defensive third and the center third. They work closely with the goal keeper to intercept passes and block potential scoring shots. This role requires great speed and the ability to read the movement of the ball. A goal defence jumps high to deflect a pass intended for the goal attack. Effective players in this position use long arms to disrupt the vision of the shooter. They also help move the ball out of the defensive area after a rebound. One real-world example shows a goal defence intercepting a bounce pass near the edge of the circle.
