A goal kick in football is a method of restarting play awarded to the defending team when the whole of the ball crosses the goal line, either on the ground or in the air, and was last touched by an attacking player, and no goal has been scored. The defending team takes the kick from any point within their goal area (the six‑yard box), and the ball must be stationary on the ground before the kick is taken.
Opposing players must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in play, and the ball becomes in play once it is kicked and clearly moves. A goal can be scored directly from a goal kick against the opposing team, but not as an own goal. The player taking the goal kick cannot touch the ball again until it has been touched by another player. Goal kicks give the defending team an opportunity to build play from the back and relieve pressure after the ball has gone out of play.
