Goofy foot describes a stance where the surfer leads with the right foot. This position places the left foot at the back of the board. The name comes from an old cartoon character who surfed this way. A goofy foot surfer faces the wave when riding toward the left side. This orientation is less common than the regular foot stance among athletes. The back foot still acts as the primary anchor for steering and speed. One surfer stands with the right leg forward on a peeling left wave. Choosing this stance depends entirely on which foot feels most natural for balance. Many professional surfers use the goofy foot stance to win world titles. This foot placement does not change the difficulty of the sport for beginners.
