Green Room Meaning in Surfing

The green room is a slang term for the inside of a barrel. It refers to the light filtering through the water as it curls overhead. Surfers use this name to describe the feeling of being inside the wave. The world seems to slow down while the rider travels through the tunnel. It is a peaceful and intense experience that remains very difficult to achieve. The color of the water determines the specific shade of the room inside. A surfer gazes at the circular opening while inside the green room. Exiting this space is the ultimate reward for any advanced ocean surfer. One rider disappears into the green room before coming out at the end. This experience is often cited as the reason why people love surfing.
