Grid Penalty Meaning in Formula 1

A grid penalty moves a driver back on the starting grid. It applies before the race begins. Officials assign it for rule or technical violations. The driver loses a set number of positions. For example an engine change may cause a ten place drop. If he qualified third, he starts thirteenth. Grid penalties reshape the starting order. Drivers must then overtake during the race. This makes recovery drives more challenging.
