Grinding Meaning in Cycling

Grinding describes a specific style of pedaling where the rider uses a very heavy gear. The cyclist pushes down with great force but moves their legs at a slow pace. This technique often happens during steep climbs when the rider lacks easier gear options. It looks like the athlete is struggling against the resistance of the bike. For example, you might see a mountain biker grinding up a muddy hill in a high gear. This method puts significant strain on the muscles and the knee joints. Most professional coaches advise against constant grinding because it causes fatigue very quickly. They prefer a faster leg speed which is much more efficient for the heart. However, some powerful riders use grinding effectively to generate massive torque on short slopes. It requires a lot of raw strength to keep the bike moving forward. You can hear the chain under tension during a heavy grinding session. It serves as a reminder of the physical demands found in outdoor cycling. Mastering your gears helps you avoid grinding when your legs feel tired.
