Grip tape consists of specialized adhesive material that weightlifters wrap around their thumbs or the barbell. This tape increases friction between the skin and the metal surface to prevent the bar from slipping. Many athletes use it specifically on the thumbs when performing the hook grip to protect against skin tears. The textured surface of the tape provides a more secure hold even when the hands become sweaty. An athlete applies a fresh layer of tape to their thumbs before the heavy snatch session. This extra layer of protection allows for more repetitions without the pain of friction burns on the skin. High quality tape stays in place during fast and explosive movements without rolling or peeling off.
