Guard Meaning in Rugby Union

A guard is a defender who stands directly next to a ruck or scrum to protect the edge. Their job is to stop the opposing scrum-half or a forward from running around the side. There is usually a guard on both the left and right sides of every physical contest on the ground. They must stay very close to the pile of players to ensure there are no small gaps. If a guard is lazy, the attacking team can easily sneak through for a big gain. They are the first line of defense in a very tight and high-pressure area of the pitch. This role requires great focus and the ability to make a tackle from a standing start. For example, a forward might act as a guard and tackle an opponent trying to pick and drive. This stop prevents the attack from getting past the first defender near the ball. They are the anchors of the line.
