A half somersault describes a dive with exactly 180 degrees of aerial rotation. The athlete starts in a vertical position and ends in the opposite orientation. For most dives, this means starting on the feet and entering head-first. This fundamental movement is the basis for all basic dives in every group. The diver must control their speed to avoid over-rotating past the vertical line. This skill teaches beginners how to find the water while they are moving.
