The hang snatch involves lifting the barbell to an overhead position from a standing start. The bar hangs at the level of the knees or hips instead of the ground. This drill forces the athlete to generate immense power in a very short distance. It is an excellent tool for correcting errors in the final extension of the lift. Lifters also use this to practice catching the bar in a deep and stable squat. The movement requires perfect balance and coordination to keep the weight from drifting forward. An athlete performs a hang snatch to build confidence in their overhead receiving position. Keeping the arms straight until the hips explode ensures maximum energy transfer.
