Hanging in the pocket describes a ball that is sitting right on the edge of a hole. It is so close to falling in that even a tiny vibration might sink it. This is usually the result of a shot that didn’t have quite enough speed to finish.
A hanging ball is an incredibly easy target for the next player to step up. It can be a source of frustration if you were the one who left it there. However, it can also be used strategically to block an opponent’s path or create a hazard. For example, the eight ball is hanging in the pocket after a slow and cautious hit.
The next player simply taps it in to win the entire game instantly. These moments are often the most tense and exciting parts of a close match. Every beginner loves finding a ball hanging in the pocket for an easy score.
