Heel Drive Meaning in Weightlifting

Heel drive refers to the force applied through the back of the foot during a lift. The athlete pushes against the floor with their heels to generate maximum upward power. This technique ensures the weight remains balanced over the center of the total foot. Lifting the heels too early causes the body to lean forward and lose stability. Driving through the heels engages the powerful muscles in the legs and the gluteal group. This is especially important during the heavy squatting portion of a clean or snatch. A lifter focuses on heel drive to stand up from a very deep squat. Maintaining this pressure prevents the barbell from pulling the athlete off their stable base.
