Heian Nidan represents the second level of the peaceful mind series in traditional karate. This form introduces complex techniques including the side kick and the back fist strike. It focuses on using both arms simultaneously to perform defensive and offensive actions together. Movements require more agility and coordination than the previous form in the beginner syllabus. Students learn to transition between different stances like the back stance and the front stance. An athlete uses a knife hand block to deflect a punch in a practice session. Successful performance depends on the ability to change directions quickly while maintaining a low center. Using the back stance helps a practitioner keep distance from an attacker while preparing a counter.
