High-aspect describes a sail or keel design that is tall and narrow rather than short and wide. This geometry is highly efficient for sailing upwind because it creates less drag and better lift, much like the long wings of a glider. Modern racing yachts and high-performance cruisers almost always feature high-aspect rigs and keels for superior speed. One specific example involves a racing boat with a high-aspect mainsail that allows it to point closer to the wind than a traditional boat. While efficient, high-aspect sails can be more difficult to trim and require a more rigid mast to support the height. This design trend reflects the move toward high-performance aerodynamics in modern naval architecture. It is the standard for vessels looking to maximize their windward performance.
