Hikite is a fundamental karate principle that translates to the pulling hand or the retracting arm. When one hand strikes forward the other hand pulls back sharply to the hip in a chamber. This opposing motion creates a physical counterbalance that increases the speed and power of the forward strike. It also prepares the pulling hand for a subsequent block or a powerful second punch in sequence. The elbow stays tucked close to the ribs to protect the side of the body from hits. A student pulls their left hand to the hip while delivering a right hand punch. Squeezing the muscles at the end of the pull adds a snapping effect to the strike. This dual arm action is the key to generating maximum force in traditional karate.
