Hit and Run Meaning in Softball

A hit and run is a coordinated offensive play where the runner starts early. The runner on base begins sprinting toward the next bag as the pitcher releases ball. At the same time the batter attempts to hit the ball anywhere on the field. This strategy aims to move the runner multiple bases or avoid a double play. A runner on first base dashes toward second while the batter swings at a strike. The batter hits a grounder into the gap vacated by the covering middle infielder. This move requires excellent communication and timing between the batter and the baserunner on play. If the batter misses the ball the catcher has a chance to throw out the runner. Coaches use this tactic to pressure the defense and create more scoring opportunities for the team.
