An illegal block happens when a player uses their body incorrectly to stop someone. This occurs when an offensive player moves to obstruct a defender’s legal path. The blocker must remain stationary and give the opponent enough space to react. Moving while blocking or using the arms to push is against the rules. Referees call this foul to prevent dangerous collisions and maintain a fair game. An attacker moves into a defender to create space for a teammate’s shot. This violation results in a turnover and a free throw for the defense. Players must learn the correct positioning to set a legal and effective screen. Proper blocking technique involves standing still with the arms close to the torso. Illegal blocks disrupt the defensive flow and are strictly penalized by match officials.
