In the bin is a slang term used when a player is sent to the sidelines for a temporary suspension. This happens when a player receives a yellow card from the referee for a significant foul or repeated mistakes. The player must sit in a designated area, often called the sin bin, for exactly ten minutes of game time. During this period, their team is forced to play with one fewer person, which creates a massive disadvantage. Once the ten minutes are over, the player can return to the field during a break in the play. This punishment is used to control the game and discourage players from cheating or playing dangerously on the pitch. For example, a defender might intentionally trip an opponent to stop a certain try from being scored by the attackers. The referee shows the yellow card, and the player spends the next ten minutes in the bin watching the game. It is a costly penalty.
