Infield Meaning in Softball

The infield is the diamond-shaped area of the field that includes the four main bases. This part of the playing surface consists of dirt and the surrounding inner grass sections. Four primary defenders and the pitcher and catcher work within this specific central zone. The distance between the bases in this area is sixty feet in standard softball games. A third baseman stands on the dirt to stop a ground ball from reaching the outfield. Most of the fast-paced action and quick throws happen inside this smaller part of the field.
