Definition: Infielders are the four defensive players who stand on or near the dirt area surrounding the bases. The group includes the first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman.
Their primary job is to catch ground balls and line drives hit into the “diamond” and throw the runners out before they reach a base. Because the ball reaches them very quickly, infielders must have fast reflexes and the ability to throw accurately across short distances.
Example: The infielders moved closer to home plate to try and stop the runner from scoring on a ground ball.
