Intentional Walk Signal Meaning in Softball

The intentional walk signal is the gesture a coach or catcher uses to request a walk. In many modern softball leagues the pitcher does not have to throw any actual pitches. The defensive coach simply points toward first base to inform the umpire of the decision. This speed-up rule saves time and prevents accidental hits during a series of wide throws. A coach holds up four fingers and points to the base from the dugout area. The umpire then directs the batter to move directly to the first base bag safely. This signal communicates the strategic choice to the officials and the opposing team members immediately. It removes the physical requirement of throwing balls far outside of the standard strike zone. Using this signal allows the game to continue quickly with the new baserunner in place.
