Interval training involves performing a series of swims with specific rest periods in between. This method allows athletes to swim at higher speeds than they could maintain continuously. By breaking a long distance into smaller pieces, swimmers can focus on their technique. The rest period allows the heart rate to drop slightly before the next fast repetition. An athlete swims ten repetitions of fifty meters with fifteen seconds of rest each. This type of practice is the foundation of most competitive swimming training programs worldwide.
