The jerk drive is the initial leg push that launches the barbell upward. This movement starts with a shallow dip of the knees followed by a jump. The arms do not push the bar until the legs complete their vertical drive. An athlete focuses on a straight jerk drive to keep the bar balanced. Keeping the heels down during the dip maximizes the power transferred to the bar. A strong jerk drive is necessary to move heavy weights above the head.
